EVERYONE CALLED ME CRAZY FOR MARRYING A 60-YEAR-OLD WOMAN
Eleanor sat down slowly.
„I need you to listen until I’m finished.”
I couldn’t speak.
My heart was pounding too hard.
She reached into the envelope I’d refused moments earlier.
Instead of money…
She removed an old photograph.
The edges were faded.
A young woman smiled while holding a newborn baby.
I recognized her instantly.
„My mother…”
Eleanor nodded.
„Yes.”
I stared at the picture.
„But…”
„…you’re standing beside her.”
The room spun.
Eleanor wiped away a tear.
„Your mother was my younger sister.”
I felt every muscle in my body lock.
„What?”
„We were separated when we were children.”
„Our family fell apart after our parents died.”
She took a shaky breath.
„Your mother spent years searching for me.”
„So did I.”
I looked again at the photograph.
My mother couldn’t have been more than twenty.
She was laughing.
I’d never seen that picture before.
„Why didn’t she tell me?”
„Because she believed I had died.”
Eleanor opened another envelope.
Inside were dozens of returned letters.
Every one addressed to my mother.
Every one stamped:
Undeliverable.
„For twenty-five years,” Eleanor whispered,
„I wrote to her.”
„Someone intercepted every letter.”
My stomach tightened.
„Who?”
She looked at me with heartbreaking sadness.
„Your father.”
I stood so quickly my chair crashed to the floor.
„No.”
„He loved her.”
„He did.”
„But he hated me.”
She explained that years earlier, she and my mother had inherited equal shares in a valuable family business.
My father wanted complete control.
He convinced my mother that Eleanor had abandoned the family forever.
At the same time…
He secretly told Eleanor that her sister wanted nothing more to do with her.
The sisters spent decades mourning each other…
While living only a few hundred miles apart.
Tears blurred my vision.
„So…”
„…why marry me?”
Her face crumpled.
„Because I didn’t know who you were.”
My heart stopped.
„When we met…”
„…you introduced yourself as Travis.”
„You never mentioned your last name.”
„I knew you only as the kind young man who volunteered at the library.”
„When I finally saw your birth certificate while preparing the marriage paperwork…”
„I realized.”
I whispered,
„Then why didn’t you stop the wedding?”
She broke down crying.
„Because I should have.”
„But after losing my sister…”
„…after living alone for so many years…”
„I was terrified of losing someone else I loved.”
Silence filled the room.
Finally I sat beside her.
„You are not my wife.”
She nodded through tears.
„No.”
„But if you’ll allow me…”
„…I’d like to be the aunt your mother always hoped you’d know.”
Months later, the marriage was legally annulled.
Not in anger.
But by mutual agreement.
Together we reopened the investigation into the missing inheritance records.
The truth eventually came out.
My father admitted he had hidden the letters for decades.
Not because of money alone…
But because he feared losing my mother if Eleanor ever returned.
By then…
It was far too late.
Years afterward, Eleanor and I spent every Thanksgiving together.
She never remarried.
I eventually did.
She stood proudly in the front row at my wedding.
When my daughter was born…
She was the first person I asked to hold her.
People often asked how two people could survive such an unimaginable truth.
I always answered the same way:
„Some relationships end…”
„…so the right one can finally begin.”
„I lost a wife that never should have been.”
„But I found the family I’d been missing my entire life.”
