I THOUGHT MY HUSBAND HAD SENT ME 100 YELLOW ROSES

The officers arrived within fifteen minutes.

One of them looked at the bouquet.

„Can you tell us why you believed this was an emergency?”

I nodded.

„My husband and I used to work with search-and-rescue volunteers before we got married.”

The older officer frowned.

„And?”

I pointed toward the three marked roses.

„We used colored ribbons to leave coded messages during wilderness searches.”

He leaned closer.

„What does this mean?”

I swallowed.

„Three marked points inside a perfect square…”

„…meant ‘Don’t trust the location. Someone is watching.’

The officer’s expression changed instantly.

„Who besides you would know that code?”

„My husband.”

„And one other person.”

„Who?”

I hesitated.

„My husband’s former business partner.”

The officer wrote down the name.

„Why would he send this?”

„I don’t know.”

Just then…

My phone rang.

It wasn’t my husband.

It was an unknown number.

I answered.

Only silence.

Then…

Three slow knocks echoed through the speaker.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

The call disconnected.

The officers immediately requested a trace.

One of them quietly asked,

„When did you last speak to your husband?”

„Yesterday morning.”

„He sounded normal.”

An hour later…

A black SUV pulled into my driveway.

A detective stepped out carrying a laptop.

„We’ve located the florist.”

„Did my husband order the flowers?”

The detective slowly shook his head.

„No.”

„They were paid for in cash.”

„But we recovered surveillance footage.”

He turned the screen toward me.

My stomach dropped.

The man buying the roses…

Was my husband’s former partner, Eric.

The same man who had disappeared after being accused of stealing millions from their company two years earlier.

„He asked the florist to arrange them exactly this way,” the detective said.

„And to make sure they were delivered today.”

Before anyone could speak…

Another officer’s radio crackled.

„We found your husband’s rental car.”

My knees nearly gave out.

„Where?”

„At the airport.”

„Empty.”

„But inside the glove compartment…”

„…we found an envelope addressed to you.”

The detective carefully handed it to me.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Only one sentence was written.

I couldn’t call. He was listening. Follow the flowers.

Everyone looked back at the bouquet.

The detective carefully lifted the three marked roses.

Hidden beneath the stems…

Taped to the floral foam…

Was a tiny GPS tracking device.

Not one tracking my house.

One recording everywhere the bouquet had traveled before reaching me.

Investigators obtained the location history.

The final stop before the florist…

An abandoned warehouse outside the city.

Police surrounded the building that evening.

Inside…

They found Eric.

And my husband.

Alive.

Eric had taken his phone, monitored his movements, and forced him to stay while he tried to recover financial records he believed my husband still possessed.

Unable to contact me directly…

My husband had secretly arranged the coded warning using the only signal he knew I’d recognize from our volunteer days.

Months later, after everything was over, I asked him why he chose roses.

He smiled.

„Because I knew you’d notice they were yellow.”

„And because I knew…”

„…you’ve always counted everything.”

The bouquet eventually dried.

I kept the three marked roses in a small shadow box.

Not because they reminded me of fear…

But because they reminded me that sometimes the smallest details…

…can save a life.
